This is image was created using an "Embossing" filter, included in the photo editing program. The original photograph was an impromptu affair, and this embossed look was one way to negate a rather mundane, white T-shirt the musician was wearing at the time. I think it gives him a look of crag-like permanence--like a face on a coin.
